In 1894, a small but determined group of Episcopalian families gathered near the shimmering Pacific. They laid the cornerstone for what would become Saint Michael’s by the Sea Episcopal Church. This wasn’t just any church. It was Carlsbad’s very first. Originally perched on Oak Avenue, Saint Michael’s by the Sea offered breathtaking ocean views. The church quickly became the spiritual heart of the growing community. The original Gothic-style structure, built from wood and filled with the scent of aged timber, housed oak pews, a Victorian pump organ, and original redwood paneling. These elements whispered stories of a bygone era. In 1959, a generous donation from Florence Shipley Magee allowed the church to relocate to its present location on Carlsbad Boulevard. The original structure was carefully moved, preserving its historic charm. A new entryway replaced the old one, which led directly into the choir area. Modern heating and air conditioning were added for comfort. But the heart of Saint Michael’s by the Sea remained untouched. The church continues to serve the community. Regular Sunday and weekday services are held within its historic walls, as are weddings and funerals, marking the milestones of life for generations of Carlsbad residents. The church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It also represents the rich history of Carlsbad. Saint Michael’s by the Sea isn’t just a building. It’s a living story. It is a beacon of faith by the sea.
