Welcome to Bardowie Loch. A place where the past whispers on the wind. Its story stretches back centuries. It offers a glimpse into Scotland’s rich heritage.

Bardowie is a hamlet in East Dunbartonshire. It was once part of Stirlingshire until 1975. Then it became part of the Strathclyde region. Another reorganisation in 1996 placed Bardowie in East Dunbartonshire.

Look to the northern side of Bardowie Loch. You will see Bardowie Castle. This category A listed building dates back to the 16th century. Imagine the lives lived within those stone walls. Additions were made to the castle in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Bardowie Castle was once owned by Clan Galbraith in 1214. It later passed to John Hamilton of Cadzow through marriage. The tower itself was built in 1566. Later parts of the castle are dated 1713. Thomas Buchanan of Spittal-Leny acquired the castle in the mid-18th century. His descendants owned it until the early 20th century.

Hugh Macdonald described Bardowie Castle in 1854. He called it an edifice of moderate size. He also noted its appearance of quiet cosiness and comfort. The castle has been sold several times since then. Motivational speaker Jack Black owned the property in 2002.

There was even a railway station called Bardowie Station. It opened in 1905. A housing development of 500 houses was planned. But less than 10 were actually built. The station closed in 1951.

Today, Bardowie Loch is a peaceful spot. The Clyde Cruising Club Dinghy Section uses it for sailing. Feel the cool breeze coming off the water. Imagine the sails catching the wind.

Bardowie Loch offers a sense of escape. It’s a place to connect with nature. It is a reminder of the past. Take a moment to appreciate the history and beauty that surrounds you here at Bardowie Loch.
