Whispers of an architect echo within these walls. Welcome to the Constantin Joja Memorial House. This house preserves the legacy of Constantin Joja. He was an important Romanian architect. The Constantin Joja Memorial House is located on Ion Slatineanu Street number 4. The Constantin Joja Memorial House was inaugurated in 1990. It became a museum after his death.

Constantin Joja was born in Craiova in 1908. He passed away in Bucharest in April 1991. He significantly contributed to architecture. He also helped protect historical monuments. Constantin Joja was also the brother of philosopher Athanasie Joja.

In 1935 Joja designed several houses including the Traian Garofiba House. It is located on Amiral Murgescu Street. He also designed the Ghiulescu House on the same street. In 1937 he designed the I. P. Noica family manor in Teleorman County. That same year Joja designed the Constantinescu House. It is located on Mircea Zorileanu Street. The Crescent Foundation was once located here. A bas-relief by Dumitru Anastase is near the entrance.

In 1938 Constantin Joja designed the Nicolae Mateescu House in Pucioasa. After 1953 it became the Pioneers’ House. Now it serves as a children’s club. Joja’s work also includes a villa in Breaza.

Constantin Joja’s talents extended to restoration projects. He worked on the Manuc Inn restoration from 1966 to 1970. From 1969 to 1972 he worked on the Princely Cellar restoration at the Old Court. In 1970 he collaborated with Nicolae Goga on the Tei Inn restoration. In 1971 Joja restored the Melic House. He coordinated restoration work in the Old Court area from 1972 to 1974. He worked with Nicolae Pruncu and Cristian Enachescu. From 1972 to 1983 Joja restored Saint Nicholas Dudești Church. From 1977 to 1978 he restored the Lady Church.

As a political prisoner Constantin Joja contributed to the Casino in Constanța restoration in 1953. He also worked on the Dragon Fountain. This fountain is part of the Farul Stadium complex.

Constantin Joja’s work reflects his passion. He loved Romanian architectural traditions. He sought inspiration in old houses. He documented thousands of houses in photographs. Joja explored the relationship between light and shadow. He believed it shaped architectural expression.

Constantin Joja published several books. These include “Meanings and Recovered Values” and “The Actuality of Romanian Architectural Tradition”. He also wrote “Romanian Architecture in a European Context”. His writings offer insights into his architectural philosophy.
