A symphony of rustling leaves. That’s the first thing you notice at the Naturwaldreservat Wolfsruhe. This isn’t just any forest. It’s a haven a protected sanctuary in the heart of Bamberg.
Established in 1978 the Naturwaldreservat Wolfsruhe is one of the most important forest protection areas in Upper Franconia. It covers approximately 47 hectares a significant chunk of land dedicated to preserving nature’s intricate design. It’s nestled within the Bruderwald a local recreation area south of Bamberg.
Imagine the history held within these trees. This forest started as a Mittelwald a type of woodland managed for coppicing and timber. Generations of oaks hornbeams and lindens have grown here their roots intertwining with the layers of history. You can still see evidence of this past. The dominant tree species is the pedunculate oak a testament to the area’s past forestry practices. Yet alongside these stately oaks you’ll find hornbeams winter limes and other species like birches beeches and service trees creating a diverse tapestry of life.
The undergrowth is just as captivating. The soil varies depending on the underlying geology. In areas with Rhätlias and Upper Burgsandstein you’ll find brown earth soils. In other parts where Feuerletten predominates the soil types are more diverse ranging from mesotrophic brown earths to brown earth pelosols and even pseudogleys. There are also younger stands of pines larches and hornbeams. In the southern part you’ll encounter younger stands of spruces and pines. A younger pine forest exists in the northeast. The forest communities here are characteristic of the Franconian Keuper-Lias region. The mix of tree species largely reflects natural conditions with the exception of a few coniferous stands.
Today the Naturwaldreservat Wolfsruhe is a testament to the power of conservation. No logging takes place here. Only necessary forest protection and traffic safety measures are undertaken.
