“Wahr und Frei” the motto of the Freiburger Wingolf echoes across the years. This impressive building before you is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to faith friendship and academic excellence.

Founded on November 7 1911 the Freiburger Wingolf is a Christian student fraternity. It’s part of the Wingolfsbund a larger network of similar organizations. Unlike some fraternities the Freiburger Wingolf rejects Mensur the practice of student dueling. Its members hail from all faculties of the Albert-Ludwigs University and beyond. They share a commitment to supporting each other’s studies and building enduring friendships.

The fraternity’s early years weren’t without challenges. Its founding was met with resistance from other Wingolf groups. They questioned whether a non-denominational fraternity could thrive in Freiburg’s Catholic environment. Doubts existed about its sustainability. However the Oberbadischer Philisterverein a regional association of alumni strongly supported its establishment. Their determination prevailed. The Freiburger Wingolf’s liberal theological principles sparked further debate. This was especially true regarding its acceptance of members without requiring belief in the divinity of Christ. This principle was eventually approved in 1912 after intense discussion.

The Freiburger Wingolf’s history is rich with remarkable anecdotes. During World War I active operations ceased but resumed shortly after. In 1920 a conflict erupted with the Schwizerhüsli Basel another fraternity. It was triggered by a controversial speech and a refusal to sing the German national anthem. This incident led to a break in relations between the Wingolfsbund and the Falkensteinerbund a Swiss organization. The Freiburger Wingolf maintained close ties with Schwizerhüsli. This made the dispute particularly poignant for them.

The Nazi era brought immense hardship. Membership dwindled drastically. In 1936 the last active member Hermann Müller ultimately dissolved the Freiburger Wingolf. The Rinkenhütte the fraternity’s mountain hut was sold to prevent its seizure by the SA. After World War II its re-establishment faced obstacles imposed by the French occupying forces. A small group eventually revived the fraternity in 1950.

Today the Freiburger Wingolf flourishes. It occupies a beautiful Jugendstil villa in Freiburg-Herdern. Its motto “Wahr und Frei” continues to inspire its members. Their commitment to faith friendship and academic pursuit is a legacy that extends far beyond these walls. The fraternity demonstrates remarkable resilience. It has persevered through tumultuous times. It remains a vital part of Freiburg’s student life and culture.
