A church older than time itself, you might think, standing here in front of the Pfarrkirche St. Stephanus. Don’t let the bright, well-maintained facade fool you. The Pfarrkirche St. Stephanus has a history as layered and enduring as the stones it’s built with. The first church on this site was documented as early as 1379. Can you imagine the Salzburg of that time, a world away from the city we know today? Unfortunately, tragedy struck in 1872 when a fire ravaged the original structure. Like a phoenix from the ashes, the Pfarrkirche St. Stephanus was rebuilt, this time incorporating the sturdy “Konglomeratsteine” from the nearby Tiefsteinklamm gorge. Look closely at the nave and tower, and you can see these very stones, each one a testament to the church’s resilience. Inside you’ll find the spirit of the Baroque era embodied in the church’s single-nave, three-bay design. Notice the three-sided Gothic choir, a lingering echo of its earlier form. Feast your eyes on the intricate carvings of the high altar, depicting the stoning of St. Stephen, overlooked by the Holy Trinity. But the Pfarrkirche St. Stephanus also holds hidden treasures. Seek out the statues of St. Florian and St. George flanking the altar, masterpieces by Meinrad Guggenbichler dating back to the turn of the 18th century. His hand is also visible in the poignant crucifixion group on the right side of the altar, as well as those of St. Sebastian and St. Leonhard further down the nave. Before you leave, take a moment to appreciate the baptismal font fashioned from Untersberger marble, a silent witness to countless baptisms since 1642. The Pfarrkirche St. Stephanus isn’t just a church, it’s a vessel carrying centuries of Salzburger history.
