Glancing at the imposing facade of the Andreas-Gymnasium a wave of history washes over you. This isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to Berlin’s rich past.

The Andreas-Gymnasium stands proudly on Koppenstrasse 76 in Friedrichshain. Its history stretches back to 1833 when it first opened its doors as the Stralauer Stadtschule. Over the years it changed names. It became the Andreas-Schule then the Andreas-Realgymnasium. During the communist era it was even known as the EOS Friedrich Engels. Finally in 2017 it settled on its current name the Andreas-Gymnasium.

The main school building a masterpiece of architecture is the work of renowned Stadtbaurat Ludwig Hoffmann. He designed it between 1904 and 1906. The cost was a staggering 1.5 million Reichsmarks. Hoffmann’s design incorporated a blend of practicality and classical aesthetics. Robust muschelkalk stone represents the harsh realities of life. Delicate cornices and sculptures symbolize the classical education offered within. Four sculptures by Josef Rauch depict children tending to animals. They are a subtle reminder of the educational process nurturing and guiding young minds.

The school’s original location was at Stralauer Platz. It later moved to Lange Strasse 31. The building’s courtyard once housed a gymnasium and a garden. Sadly both were destroyed during the Second World War. The school building itself shows evidence of wartime damage on the street-facing facade a permanent reminder of its resilience.

The interior is spacious and grand. Large classrooms cross-vaulted hallways and impressive vestibules create an awe-inspiring atmosphere. Ornate plasterwork and sculptures once adorned the staircases and corridors. A magnificent organ that once graced the school’s aula is sadly no more.

Notable alumni include the renowned statesman Gustav Stresemann who graduated in 1897. The infamous GDR politician Günter Schabowski also walked these halls graduating in 1946. Even the well-known journalist Maybrit Illner is an alumna graduating in 1984. The Andreas-Gymnasium has played a significant role in shaping the lives of many influential individuals.

Today the Andreas-Gymnasium thrives. It continues to provide high-quality education to students. Its blend of academic excellence rich history and modern facilities make it a truly exceptional institution. The Andreas-Gymnasium stands as a symbol of Berlin’s enduring spirit a place where history and learning intertwine.
