The imposing stone structure before you is the Church of Our Saviour. Its history is richer than its Gothic Revival architecture suggests. Built in 1868 the Church of Our Saviour stands as a testament to faith and family. Brothers Amos Adams Lawrence and William R Lawrence commissioned this magnificent building. They dedicated it to their father Amos Lawrence a prominent textile industrialist and philanthropist.

Architect Alexander Rice Esty designed the Church of Our Saviour. His vision brought to life this beautiful space for worship. The first service was held on March 22 1868. The Reverend Elliott Tompkins served as the first rector. The Church of Our Saviour quickly became a focal point for the Longwood and Cottage Farm communities. It welcomed twelve families who formed its initial parish. These families were accepted into the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts in April 1867.

More than just a place of worship the Church of Our Saviour holds deep personal connections. Sarah Appleton Lawrence wife of Amos A Lawrence gifted the rectory. Dedicated in 1886 it stands as a lasting tribute to her late husband. Later her children added a transept chapel. This beautiful chapel served as a family memorial a touching detail that connects generations. The Church of Our Saviour’s history echoes with significant figures. The Reverend Henry Knox Sherrill served as the fourth rector. He later rose to become Bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts and Presiding Bishop of the national Episcopal Church. The church has a rich musical tradition. Composer Gardner Evans served as organist and choir director for many years.

The Church of Our Saviour has endured challenges. Its steeple suffered damage twice once in 1923 and again after 1977. These events tested the community’s resilience but the Church of Our Saviour remained standing. The church has undergone renovations and additions throughout its life. A parish hall designed by Cabot and Chandler was completed in 1880. It was later enlarged in 1922. These physical changes reflect the community’s growth and evolving needs. The Church of Our Saviour has been a cornerstone of the Longwood community for over a century and a half. It continues to serve as a place of spiritual solace and community gathering. The Church of Our Saviour is not merely a building. It is a living legacy a testament to faith family and enduring community spirit. It stands as a beautiful reminder of the past and the continuing hope for the future.
