Feel the ancient stones beneath your fingertips. These are the Marinid Tombs. Magnificent in their ruin they stand sentinel above Fes el-Bali.

The Marinid Tombs a royal necropolis hold a piece of Morocco’s rich past. For centuries the Marinid dynasty ruled. They built this site a testament to their power. The tombs were originally a lavish complex. Two large rectangular mausoleums still stand. They once boasted pyramidal wooden roofs and vibrant green tiles.

Sadly much of the original ornamentation is gone. Time and quarrying have taken their toll. Yet fragments of carved stucco and Arabic inscriptions remain. These whispers of the past offer a glimpse into the tombs’ former glory. Leo Africanus a famous traveler described the tombs as heavily decorated with colourful marble epitaphs. Imagine the vibrant colours once adorning these walls.

Interestingly the tombs’ occupants aren’t all clearly identified. We know some Marinid rulers rest here. Among them are Abu Salim Ibrahim Abu ‘l-Abbas Ahmad II Abu Faris Abd al-Aziz II and Abu ‘Amir Abdallah. The last Marinid sultan Abu Muhammad Abd al-Haqq II is also buried here. Even a young princess Zineb and a high official Abu Ali al-Nasir are remembered within these weathered walls. Their tombstones now reside in the Dar Batha Museum.

Beyond the grand mausoleums lies a smaller qubba a domed structure. Its 12-sided dome is gone but its horseshoe arches remain. This smaller structure was enclosed by walls perhaps a forecourt. This design echoes similar mausoleums in Spain and Algeria.

The Marinid Tombs aren’t just historical monuments. They’re a breathtaking viewpoint. From here you can gaze upon Fes el-Bali. The sunset views are legendary. Listen closely. You may hear the adhan the call to prayer echoing from the mosques below. A symphony of faith a testament to the enduring spirit of Fes.

The Marinid Tombs stand as a poignant reminder of a bygone era. They speak of power of faith of life and of death. They are a silent story etched in stone. A story that continues to captivate visitors from around the world.
