“Bukit”. That’s what they called the location where Mushallah Baitul Muslim stands. Today we explore this house of worship. It is not just a place of prayer. It’s a landmark with a unique story.

Mushallah Baitul Muslim is situated on a hill. This elevated position offers a sense of serenity. It stands approximately 400 meters above Batu Ampar Road.

Let’s step back in time. The Mushallah Baitul Muslim was established between 1972 and 1975. Back then Batam was largely undeveloped. It was a time when Pertamina, under Pak Ibnu Sutowo, held significant authority here. Ahmad Riaudi, the Imam of Masjid Baitul Makmur recalls those early days. He shared stories of Batam’s transformation.

The Mushallah Baitul Muslim witnessed changes in leadership. In 1978 control shifted to the Batam Authority now known as BP Batam. During its prime many high-ranking officials prayed here. Ministers from President Soeharto’s era attended Friday prayers in 1997. Even figures like Pak Habibie, Faisal Tanjung and Susilo Sudarman visited. Muammar ZA an Indonesian Qori also served as a khatib and Imam for Friday prayers at the Mushallah Baitul Muslim.

Spanning approximately one hectare the Mushallah Baitul Muslim building measures about 30 x 38 meters. It can accommodate around 2,000 worshippers.

From this vantage point visitors can see across the sea. Ships pass by frequently. On a clear day you can spot the towering buildings of Singapore. It is only a few kilometers away from Batam.

The Mushallah Baitul Muslim has witnessed Batam’s growth. It stands as a silent witness to the changes in Batam’s leadership. This place has significant historical value for Batam.

Though it faces challenges in upkeep the Mushallah Baitul Muslim remains a cherished place. Volunteers and community donations support its maintenance. The Imam hopes for greater government attention. He believes its historical importance warrants it. He even wished for President SBY to visit.

The Mushallah Baitul Muslim is more than just a mosque. It’s a testament to Batam’s past and a beacon for its future.
