Did the name Yingtianfu ever grace the magnificent Yongdingmen gate of the 营城建都? No. That name belonged to Nanjing during the early Ming dynasty. Here at the 营城建都, we’re standing on the very ground where emperors made decisions that shaped not just Beijing, but all of China. The 营城建都 marks the spot where emperors decided to establish their capital, to build their city, their dynasty’s heart. The Liao Dynasty’s presence here is undeniable. In 938, they made this city their Nanjing, their “Southern Capital.” They chose this location strategically. It was a hub, a crossroads between the north and south, a place of trade and military importance. They laid the foundations, built the walls, established the gates. The Jin Dynasty, however, saw even greater potential. In 1153, they declared 营城建都 their Zhongdu, their “Central Capital,” expanding the city, building palaces. They made it a true center of power, shaping the very layout that Beijing retains to this day. The Mongols, under Kublai Khan, continued this legacy, building Dadu. They incorporated the existing structures into their grand design, a city that blended Mongol, Central Asian, and Chinese architectural styles. The 营城建都 has seen dynasties rise and fall, each leaving its indelible mark on the landscape. The Ming Dynasty, under the Yongle Emperor, further refined the city. His ambitious construction projects, including the Forbidden City, solidified Beijing’s status as the imperial capital.
