A soaring silver wing greets you. This is Montgomery County Park. More than just a park it’s a monument to aviation history. Right here stands a testament to John J Montgomery a pioneer of flight. In the 1880s he made early glider flights in Otay California. His achievements were remarkable considering the time. The park’s centerpiece is a 93-foot stainless steel wing. It’s a static test wing from a Consolidated B-32 Dominator bomber. The wing is a striking visual reminder of Montgomery’s legacy.

The Montgomery Memorial was dedicated in 1950. It celebrates Montgomery’s pioneering work. The County of San Diego acquired seven acres for the monument in 1945. They later expanded this to 25 acres for the park itself. This impressive feat involved local leaders like Paul Mannen and Gordon Wiggins. They worked tirelessly to honor Montgomery’s contributions. Even Congressman Bob Wilson played a key role. He was the research chairman for the project.

The monument’s design is the work of modernist Lloyd Ruocco. A terrazzo walk surrounds the monument. It features the names of aviators inspired by Montgomery. A nearby tablet is inscribed to remember his winged flight. The dedication ceremony in 1950 was a momentous occasion. John Montgomery’s brother and sister attended. The event marked the official recognition of his incredible achievements.

The park wasn’t just about the memorial. The Waller family donated adjacent land. It expanded the park and led to the naming of Montgomery-Waller Recreation Center. This community space has hosted many events over the years. It is now an important space for recreation and community gatherings. Look closely at the ground around the wing. You’ll find the names of those who followed Montgomery’s path into aviation. They too deserve recognition for their contributions to flight.

Montgomery County Park isn’t just a place to relax and enjoy the sunset. It is a living memorial. It celebrates the spirit of innovation and the courage of early aviators. Come explore its history. Discover the stories embedded in the very ground you walk on. Remember the man who dared to dream of flight. His legacy soars above you in the impressive silver wing.
