Founded in 1971 as the California Family Study Center Phillips Graduate Institute has a rich history. It was located in Chatsworth Los Angeles. The Institute offered numerous degrees. These included doctoral degrees in business administration psychology and organizational management and consulting. Master’s degrees were offered in family therapy art therapy and human relations. Phillips Graduate Institute trained over 2700 family therapists. It collaborated closely with the California Family Counseling Center. This center operated at the same location. In 1992 it was renamed Phillips Graduate Institute. In 2016 it became Phillips Graduate University. The university transferred its marriage and family therapy program to Campbellsville University in 2019. Campbellsville University opened a Los Angeles Education Center at the former Phillips Graduate University site. This center continued the legacy of the Institute. The Institute’s focus was on graduate degrees and professional doctorates. These were in psychology human relations and organizational development. The Institute also offered postgraduate credential programs. It provided continuing education workshops for mental health practitioners. Many notable individuals served as presidents of the Institute including Ed Cox Lisa Porche-Burke and Yolanda J Nunn Gorman. The Institute’s David H Fox Consulting Center offered counseling services. This served the surrounding community. Students benefitted from a rich and dynamic learning environment. The Institute’s legacy lives on through its graduates who are highly regarded for their professionalism. Its impact on the field of mental health is undeniable. The Phillips Graduate Institute left a lasting mark on Los Angeles.
