Could you imagine life centered around the rhythmic turning of a water wheel? That was daily life here at Neumühle. This isolated dwelling whispers tales of centuries past. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of those who harnessed the power of the Rednitz River.
Neumühle is a part of Oberasbach in the district of Fürth. This small community has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. In 1279, Neumühle was first documented as “molendinum prope castrum”. This translates to “mill near the castle [Altenberg]”. Eberhardus de Hertingsberg gifted properties here to the Nuremberg Clarisse Monastery. Over time, the name evolved. By 1316, it was known as “mvlenze dem Berge”. The name “Neumühle” appeared in 1393.
Let’s step back in time. Picture the scene in the late 18th century. Neumühle consisted of a single estate. The High Court was under the jurisdiction of the Brandenburg-Ansbach judicial office in Roßtal. The St. Klara Monastery Office of the Imperial City of Nuremberg owned the land.
From 1797 to 1808, Neumühle was under the authority of the Cadolzburg Justice and Chamber Office. In 1808, Neumühle became part of the Oberasbach tax district. It also joined the rural community of Oberasbach, which was founded in the same year.
Looking at the Rednitz River, it is crucial to Nurnberg. The Neumühle also plays a role in monitoring the water quality of the Rednitz. The Fließgewässer-Messstation Neumühle measures the nutrient input into the greater area. The nutrient pollution from the Schwabach sewage treatment plant has been largely reduced. Insignificant mixed water discharges from Nuremberg’s canal network enter the Rednitz during heavy rainfall.
The religious life of Neumühle has also seen changes. Since the Reformation, the area has been predominantly Evangelical Lutheran. Originally, it was part of the St. Rochus parish in Zirndorf. Today, the St. Markus parish in Altenberg is responsible. Roman Catholic residents belong to the St. Johannes parish in Oberasbach.
As you stand here at Neumühle, consider its long history. From its humble beginnings as a mill, Neumühle has been a constant presence. It is a witness to the ebb and flow of time in this region.
