Named after a painter, did you know Hans-Baluschek-Park offers a unique slice of Berlin? It is a green space with a story etched into its very layout. This park isn’t just a collection of trees and grass. It’s a carefully designed landscape. It reflects both nature and Berlin’s urban spirit.

Hans-Baluschek-Park stretches 1.5 kilometers between the Priesterweg and Südkreuz S-Bahn stations. This park occupies seven hectares. It is a crucial part of Berlin’s north-south greenbelt. Here, you can stroll, cycle, and skate without traffic.

Originally known as Priester-Pape-Park, Hans-Baluschek-Park was completed in 2002. It features large meadows and a long path. This path connects four uniquely designed areas. These are the Place of Play, the Place of Picknics, the Place of Sunshine, and the Place of Sports.

The park’s design intentionally echoes its location on a former railway site. Landscape architect Gabriele Kiefer used geometric shapes and materials. Steel embankments remind visitors of the area’s past. Birch and black locust trees create a wild feel. They also offer a relaxing escape within the city.

Hans Baluschek himself lived nearby. He resided in the Ceciliengärten settlement in the 1920s. Baluschek’s art often depicted Berlin life and the railway. So naming the park after him was quite fitting.

The main path is asphalted and smooth making it popular for inline skating and cycling. Families also enjoy the open spaces. The park is part of a planned cycling route from Potsdamer Platz. This will eventually connect to the Berlin-Leipzig long-distance cycle path. The Teltow Canal route will also run through Hans-Baluschek-Park. A new pedestrian path is also planned. More benches and public restrooms are coming as well.

In 2004, the park was created. It was made to offset land use from the Berlin city ring extension. The project cost seven million marks. The park connects to the Natur-Park Schöneberger Südgelände. A pedestrian bridge crosses the train tracks. This bridge links the two parks.

Hans-Baluschek-Park was recognized in 2005. It was honored for its affordable landscape design. It shows how good design can be cost-effective. The park offers views of the Schöneberger Südgelände. It provides a glimpse of Berlin’s southern skyline. It’s a space where history, recreation, and nature meet. So take a stroll and discover the charm of Hans-Baluschek-Park.
