A porcelain plaque. A simple yet powerful testament to history. This Berliner Gedenktafel stands before us. It commemorates Heinrich Seidel. The plaque itself is a rectangular panel measuring 60 by 40 centimeters. Its porcelain colour is striking. The inscription is in cobalt blue. This elegant design was the brainchild of graphic artist Wieland Schütz. He won a competition in 1984. The Berliner Gedenktafel program began in 1985. It was designed to celebrate Berlin’s 750th anniversary in 1987. Initially each West Berlin district received around 25 plaques. The Berliner Sparkasse generously sponsored them. Each plaque cost 1200 Deutsche Marks. The first three were unveiled on October 22 1985.

After the Peaceful Revolution the program expanded to East Berlin. The Sparkasse continued their support. They planned to create 350 plaques. By the turn of the century however funding ran out. Now applicants must pay 2500 Euros. They need the property owner’s permission. District council approval is also necessary. The Historical Commission of Berlin reviews each application. Wieland Schütz provides the graphic design. The KPM Royal Porcelain Factory then produces the final plaque. The applicant then arranges for its installation. It then becomes the property of the local district office.

The Berliner Gedenktafel for Heinrich Seidel is a small piece of a larger story. It speaks to a rich tradition of commemoration in Berlin. Even in the 19th century commemorative plaques were already common. Imagine the city’s streets adorned with these historical markers. This Berliner Gedenktafel program however aimed for uniformity. It sought to create a consistent and recognizable symbol of Berlin’s past. It gives us a glimpse into the life and legacy of individuals such as Heinrich Seidel. Their contributions shaped Berlin into the city we know today. The simple elegance of the plaque belies its significant purpose. It reminds us of the importance of remembering and honoring those who came before us. The Berliner Gedenktafel is more than just porcelain and ink. It is a testament to the lasting impact of individuals on a city’s story. It represents a conscious effort to preserve history for generations to come. So let us pause to appreciate this small but mighty piece of Berlin’s history.
