Agnus Dei is what you see carved above the entrance. This is the Igreja de São Romão de Arões. It stands as a testament to faith and history. This sacred space has witnessed centuries of devotion. It has seen changes that have shaped its very stones.

Let’s step back in time to the 13th century. Imagine the skilled hands that erected this church. The Igreja de São Romão de Arões was consecrated in 1237. An inscription on the lateral portal confirms this. Abbot D. Gomes de Freitas and Archbishop of Braga D. Silvestre Godinho officiated.

The Igreja de São Romão de Arões is a remarkable example of rural Romanesque architecture. It holds singular importance. It helps us understand the evolution of architecture in the Braga area.

Over the centuries, the Igreja de São Romão de Arões has undergone several transformations. These changes have subtly altered its original Romanesque design. In the early 18th century, significant interior renovations took place. A new ceiling adorned the nave. Baroque altars were erected.

In 1777, Miguel Pereira de Carvalho constructed a new coffer. Think of it as a sacristy. In 1786, João Nogueira was commissioned to build a bell tower. A year later, a window was opened in the main facade. This allowed more light to flood the interior. The Igreja de São Romão de Arões reopened for worship in 1935.

The exterior presents a longitudinal facade. A portal with a perfect arch marks the center. The tympanum features a relief of Agnus Dei. The building’s cornice rests on corbels. Zoomorphic motifs decorate these corbels.

Inside the Igreja de São Romão de Arões, the nave is covered by a coffered ceiling. Brutesco motifs are painted here. A Baroque altar stands on the Gospel side. Near the triumphal arch, two gilded altarpieces stand in national style.

The chancel has a rectangular layout. Vestiges of mural paintings are visible on the walls. The chancel is divided into two sections. A stone vault covers these sections. It rests on thick columns. The capitals display animals and stylized ribbons. These features connect to the style of Rates. The friezes relate to the decorative grammar of the Braga area.

Note the inscription on the south tympanum. It commemorates the consecration by Archbishop Silvestre and Abbot Gomes. The Igreja de São Romão de Arões has a simple yet robust structure. Originally, it lacked a bell tower and sacristy. It consisted of a single nave and a chancel. An ornamented triumphal arch separated these.

Though Romanesque in its essence, the Igreja de São Romão de Arões displays Gothic and Baroque influences. These are the result of later alterations. The main facade is simple. A lateral belfry holds two bells. The axial portal has a smooth arch. The tympanum features the sculpted Agnus Dei.

Inside, the nave is covered with a wooden vaulted ceiling. It has Baroque coffers painted with arabesques. The chancel is covered with a broken stone vault. Frisos decorated with check patterns and lanceolate themes are visible. Side altars are decorated with carvings.

During restoration work in the 1940s, remains of the original portal emerged. Animal heads were found. The interior light is dim. Light enters only through narrow windows.

Take a moment to appreciate the Igreja de São Romão de Arões. It is a blend of architectural styles. It reflects the passage of time. It is a monument to faith and art. It is a place where history comes alive.
