“Only one traditional house remains here” said Pak Durhazit. This is the Rumah Adat Limas Potong in Batam. It’s a unique structure a testament to Batam’s rich cultural heritage.

Built between 1958 and 1959 by Haji Abdul Karim a fisherman from Makassar the house stands as a symbol of the community’s spirit. Haji Karim a skilled carpenter worked part-time on the house while continuing his fishing profession. The construction involved the whole community a true example of gotong-royong or communal cooperation. This took about a year.

The Rumah Adat Limas Potong is raised on stilts about 1.5 meters high. Made entirely of meranti wood planks it shows traditional Malay craftsmanship. Its most striking feature is its roof. A layered limas roof that’s uniquely segmented hence its name Limas Potong meaning “cut pyramid”. This wasn’t a common style at the time. There were no fancy architectural terms used. The house embodies simple elegance and functionality.

Inside are photographs of Raja Isak and the house itself. There are antique items tools and statues reflecting Malay culture. The house has been a historical site since its dedication in November 2011. It serves both historical and educational purposes educating younger generations about Batam’s past. The Rumah Adat Limas Potong is more than a house. It’s a living archive of a community’s history a symbol of their resilience and their collaborative spirit. It’s a must-see for anyone wanting to understand the heart of Batam.
