“Why do they call it the Barfüßerkirche?” a curious visitor once asked. The Barfüßerkirche stands as a testament to Augsburg’s rich religious history. It is a place of serenity amid the city’s hustle.

This church has witnessed centuries of change. Its story begins in the 13th century. Franciscan friars, known as Barfüßer or barefoot friars, established a monastery here. They sought to live among the city’s workers and ordinary folk.

In 1243, the Barfüßer built their church. It stood near the Barfüßertor. This marked the edge of Augsburg. The modest church served the friars and the local community.

The Reformation brought big changes. The friars left. In 1524, the Barfüßerkirche hosted its first Protestant sermon. By 1535, it became Augsburg’s first official Protestant church.

Over time, the Barfüßerkirche underwent many changes. From 1724 to 1760, it was remodeled in the late Baroque style. In 1757, Johann Andreas Stein built a magnificent organ for the church.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself played this organ in 1777. He found the instrument unique. Albert Schweitzer also played here in 1929.

Tragedy struck during World War II. British air raids in 1944 heavily damaged the Barfüßerkirche. Only the exterior walls of the choir remained. The elaborate interior was lost to flames.

The people of Augsburg rebuilt the church. They chose a simpler design. By 1951, the Barfüßerkirche reopened. Today, an inner courtyard occupies the space where the nave once stood. The visible scars remind us of the war.

In 2013, a surprising discovery occurred. A forgotten archive was found in an old attic. These documents had been missing since 1944.

Inside the Barfüßerkirche, you can see artwork that survived. “The Baptism of Christ” by Johann Heiss and “The Last Supper” by Gottfried Eichler are on display. These pieces offer a glimpse into the church’s past splendor.

Today, the Barfüßerkirche continues as a vibrant church. It is known for its hospitality. Its green courtyard offers a peaceful retreat. The church hosts concerts. It is a place for spiritual reflection. The Barfüßerkirche is a welcoming place. People come to recharge and find peace. They connect with others and with God. This church remains an important part of Augsburg.
