A towering presence against the Cambridge skyline. That’s St John’s College Chapel. Its imposing Gothic Revival architecture is a masterpiece. It replaced a much smaller Tudor chapel. That Tudor chapel itself stood on the site of a 13th-century hospital chapel. This makes St John’s College Chapel a layered historical monument.

St John’s College Chapel is more than just a pretty building. It’s a testament to ambition and a touch of tragedy. Sir George Gilbert Scott designed it. He was a famous Gothic Revival architect. The construction was ambitious. The chapel became the tallest building in Cambridge at 164 feet high. This was a controversial project costing a whopping £78319. That was a huge sum 150 years ago.

The building process wasn’t without its bumps. The original plan lacked a tower. Alumnus Henry Hoare generously offered to fund it. Sadly Hoare died in a railway accident. He only paid £2000 of the promised £6100. St John’s College had to cover the rest. This explains why the chapel boasts a magnificent tower but no bells. The college ran out of money.

Even after its completion St John’s College Chapel received mixed reviews. One fellow famously quipped it looked like a burly man on a Shetland pony. Despite this initial reaction the chapel became a cherished space. It is an excellent acoustic environment. The renowned St John’s Choir records albums within its walls. Their latest album commemorates the chapel’s 150th anniversary.

The chapel plays a vital role in college life. It hosts around 250 services annually. These include student matriculation and graduation events. The Advent carol services are exceptionally popular. More than 600 people attend. Guests travel from across the globe to hear the choir’s Evensong. The chapel’s significance extends beyond the college. It remains a beloved landmark. It offers a glimpse into Cambridge’s rich history. It is a space that continues to inspire awe and reverence. The legacy of St John’s College Chapel endures. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith. It is also a symbol of architectural ambition.
