Perhaps Seoul’s identity is best understood by walking its streets like Yeongjung-ro. This isn’t just any road. Yeongjung-ro whispers tales of a city that has transformed itself repeatedly. Seoul was first settled in 554 and originally known as Hanyang. It was renamed Hanseong in 1392. It became the capital of the Yi Dynasty in 1394.

Imagine Seoul in 1394. The Joseon Dynasty had just moved the capital here. This road, or the path that would become Yeongjung-ro, bustled with purpose. The dynasty wanted to create a new center of power. Iconic palaces such as Gyeongbokgung exemplified architectural advancements. These advancements aligned with Confucian ideals. These palaces were not only symbols of royal power. They were spaces for governance and societal order.

But Seoul, and Yeongjung-ro, faced immense challenges. The Japanese occupation from 1910 to 1945 brought rigorous policies. These policies suppressed Korean identity and culture. The cultural oppression manifested through the forced adoption of the Japanese language. Traditional Korean customs faced immense challenges. Schools integrated Japanese curricula. Yet, resistance movements emerged. Koreans sought to reclaim their national identity and rights.

The Korean War devastated Seoul. Much damage was done to infrastructure, the economy, and public morale. The people faced the monumental task of rebuilding their lives and city. The post-war reconstruction phase revitalized the urban landscape. It stimulated economic recovery. The government implemented plans focused on industrialization and modernization. This marked the beginning of the Miracle on the Han River.

Today, more than half of South Korea’s population lives in the Seoul Capital Area. That is around 26 million people. Seoul is a global city. It is a hub of innovation, culture, and international business. Technological advancements have enhanced urban management. They have improved the quality of life for its residents.

As you walk along Yeongjung-ro, consider the blend of tradition and modernity. Seoul invests to restore and protect traditional Korean houses. The city prohibits demolitions. It excludes them from major development projects. You might even find a Hanok turned into a cafe.

Seoul is also the hub of the Korean Wave. Major K-pop labels are based here. For fans of Korean dramas and movies, Seoul offers many filming locations to explore.

Remember Teheran-ro in Gangnam. In 1978, Samneungno Street in Seoul was renamed Teheran-ro. This honored the visit of Tehran’s mayor. It shows Seoul’s global connections.

Yeongjung-ro embodies Seoul’s journey. From ancient beginnings to a global city, Seoul continues to evolve. It balances preserving its heritage with embracing innovation. As you continue your exploration, remember the resilience and dynamism that define Seoul.
