Gaze upon the elegant structure of the Kiyomizu-dera Temple. This temple was built in the late Nara period. The story of its origins is one of determination and divine vision.

A monk by the name of Enchin was tasked with constructing a temple dedicated to Kannon, the goddess of mercy. As fate would have it, he was guided to a pristine waterfall. He believed this waterfall would grant his devotees eternal happiness. His vision was to create a temple at the foot of this waterfall. This waterfall came to be known as the Otowa Waterfall. It’s said that the name “Kiyomizu,” meaning “pure water,” was inspired by the waterfall’s crystal-clear currents.

The temple was built on a hillside, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The main hall, called Hondo, is a marvel of architecture. It features a large wooden stage that juts out over the hillside. The stage is supported by 139 pillars, showcasing the ingenuity of ancient Japanese builders.

This stage offers an unparalleled vista. From this vantage point, visitors can look out over the city of Kyoto and the surrounding hills, a sight that is truly awe-inspiring, especially during the cherry blossom season, when the trees are in full bloom.

But there’s more to Kiyomizu-dera than just its beauty and rich history. The temple is home to several cultural treasures, including a Jishu Shrine. This small shrine was dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking.

The Otowa Waterfall has three separate streams flowing into a pool. It’s said that each stream is blessed with certain powers. One stream is said to grant longevity, another to bring success in studies, and the third to guarantee a fortunate love life. Visitors to the temple can take a cup of water from each stream, seeking blessings for good health, education, and romance.

Step onto the Kiyomizu Stage as if you are on a journey through time and space. Take in the splendor of the cityscape. Feel the calming presence of the Otowa Waterfall, and let your thoughts wander through the history of this magnificent temple. Listen to the whispered stories of ancient monks and the quiet prayers of seekers. Kiyomizu-dera, a testament to art, faith, and beauty.
