A Going Church for a Coming Christ That’s the motto of the New Testament Church. Right here in front of us stands a testament to faith and community. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living story etched in brick and mortar.
Founded on December 31 1960 New Testament Church began as a small cottage bible class. Pastor John Plummer Jr was inspired by the need for spiritual work in South Los Angeles. It started with fasting and prayer a humble beginning. The first service was held on January 1 1961 in a small renovated building. Only about twenty people attended.
The church quickly outgrew its first home. In February 1964 it moved to a larger building at 1847 West Florence Avenue. This location could seat 110 people. Growth continued thanks to strong fellowship and devotion. Members loved one another reflecting the early church described in Acts.
The church expanded its outreach. Door-to-door witnessing was key. In mid-1967 the church purchased land at 1941 West Florence Avenue. Tithes and offerings made this possible. A newsletter called The Scroll further strengthened the community.
Construction of the current building started in 1968. The congregation moved into the new sanctuary on January 6 1969. A dedication service followed three months later. Pastor Plummer and members dedicated the building to God’s glory.
New Testament Church’s commitment to community extended beyond its walls. The church established the New Testament Happyland Nursery in 1974. It later became a preschool and kindergarten. Many children and parents joined the church. This contributed to growth. Happyland also helped fund the church’s expansion.
The church faced challenges. In 1993 Pastor Plummer passed away. Pastor Robert Hendricks became interim pastor. The Happyland Nursery was renamed Dr John Plummer Jr Christian Academy in his memory. Later Pastor David Cross served as pastor until 1998. Pastor Hendricks then returned to lead the church. In 1999 the church celebrated a mortgage burning a milestone accomplishment.
Today New Testament Church continues to thrive. It offers ministries for all ages children youth singles married couples and more. It remains committed to community outreach. Through technology the church expanded its reach. It has a website social media and publishes The Scroll. The Youth Community Center dedicated in 2013 hosts various programs and meetings. The church also supports local initiatives like neighborhood beautification health fairs and food pantries. This is a testament to the enduring spirit of a church built on faith. This church stands as a symbol of God’s continued blessing. The New Testament Church is a vibrant place of worship and community. It remains true to its mission modeling ministry obedience discipleship evangelism and love.
