“A wave…in Nuremberg?” you might ask. Yes, right here at the Fuchslochwelle, we have a unique surfing experience. The Fuchslochwelle, also known as the Nürnberger Dauerwelle, isn’t your typical ocean wave. This is a stationary wave on the Pegnitz River, a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of the local surfing community. Over a decade of planning and over 2000 hours of volunteer work by the Nürnberger Dauerwelle e.V. brought this dream to life in February 2022. The Fuchslochwelle sits in a specially constructed channel parallel to the river. A weir in the main riverbed directs water into this channel. This water flows over a ramp, creating the standing wave where surfers can ride against the current. Dreamwave GmbH, in collaboration with the University of Innsbruck, developed this innovative, modular wave system. Three adjustable modules allow for a variety of wave shapes and sizes. This adaptability means the Fuchslochwelle can operate year-round, regardless of the river’s water level. The wave’s intensity can be adjusted, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. Erhard Muhr GmbH, a Bavarian hydraulic steel component manufacturer, constructed the Fuchslochwelle, bringing their expertise to this groundbreaking project. The facility is designed with sustainability in mind. The river itself provides the energy, unlike energy-intensive artificial wave pools. A fish ladder ensures the natural river ecosystem remains undisturbed. Even kayaks and boats can navigate the channel. The Fuchslochwelle represents a unique blend of urban sport and environmental consciousness. It offers a new dimension to Nuremberg’s recreational landscape.
