“Fifty years! Can you believe it?” That’s what people exclaimed in 2015, celebrating a big birthday for the Schule am Regenweiher.

The Schule am Regenweiher stands here. It has been educating children for decades. It is more than just a school. It’s a landmark.

Let’s step back in time to 1965. The Gropiusstadt was just rising, three years after its foundation stone was laid. The Schule am Regenweiher emerged amidst this construction. Imagine the scene. The school was surrounded by building sites and even cornfields. Access roads weren’t even finished yet.

From the very beginning, language was key at the Schule am Regenweiher. Unusually, first-graders got to use typewriters. It was also the first primary school in Neukölln to offer technical and scientific lessons. Over the years, it became known for its music focus too.

The Schule am Regenweiher embraced technology early. The typewriters were followed by a language lab. Then came computers. The Schule am Regenweiher was among the first schools to have a computer room.

In the nineties, the Schule am Regenweiher became the first primary school to focus on English. Even today, children start learning English in first grade. By fifth and sixth grade, they get an extra hour of English each week.

The Schule am Regenweiher faced challenges too. Because it lacked a proper sports field, it wasn’t included in the school sports facility renovation program. Until 2012, students had to use an inadequate gravel field for sports.

But things changed. A unique partnership was formed with Brauco Rohr- & Umweltservice GmbH & Co. Dienstleistungen KG and Frisch & Faust Tiefbau GmbH. These companies financed the construction of new sports areas on the school grounds. This was all done in cooperation with the district council.

Today, the Schule am Regenweiher welcomes around 350 students. You can find the school at Johannisthaler Chaussee 328-340. The headmaster is Peter-M. Hoppe.

The Schule am Regenweiher stands as a testament to innovation. It shows the power of community support. From typewriters to modern sports facilities, it has always put its students first. It has adapted to the changing times.
