Isn’t it remarkable how even in a city brimming with ancient temples, a hidden gem like Otani Sobyo can still surprise us? Otani Sobyo in Kyoto is not just any temple. It is also a mausoleum. This combination makes it a rarer find in Kyoto.

Otani Sobyo belongs to Higashi Honganji. It is the head temple of Shinshu Otani-ha. This is a branch of Pure Land Buddhism. The temple contains one of the largest Buddhist graveyards in Kyoto.

Shinran’s remains rest here. He was the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Japanese Buddhism. Many followers come from across Japan to visit Shinran’s mausoleum. Shinran, also known as Kenshin Daishi, passed away in 1262 at the age of 90.

Ten years later, in 1272, his youngest daughter Kakushin-ni built the Otani Sobyo Mausoleum. The mausoleum moved several times. Finally, in 1670, it found its place within the Higashi Honganji Temple grounds. Tokugawa Ieyasu established the temple itself in 1602. In the late 17th century, the mausoleum and halls were rebuilt. Tokugawa Yoshimune donated land in 1745. This allowed the Otani Sobyo Mausoleum to expand.

Imagine standing before the Omote Karamon. The front gate features beautiful wooden carvings. The Main Hall contains a statue of Amitabha. Amitabha is the principal Buddha of Pure Land Buddhism. The hall was completed in 1701. Take your time to explore the Higashi Otani Cemetery. It covers a vast area.

Otani Sobyo is located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama District. It sits near Maruyama Park and Kodai-ji Temple. The location is easily accessible. Take bus 206 or 207 from Gion bus stop. From there, it is a short walk to Otani Sobyo. Alternatively, take the Kyoto City Subway to Higashiyama Station. Then walk for about 10 minutes to the temple.

Consider visiting during the Manto-Kuyo Ceremony in August. Thousands of lanterns light up the mausoleum. The nearby cemetery also glows. This guides the spirits of ancestors on their way home.

Otani Sobyo is open from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm. There are no closing days and admission is free.

Otani Sobyo offers a serene escape. It provides a unique glimpse into Japanese Buddhism. Its beautiful architecture leaves a lasting impression. Take a moment to appreciate the tranquility. Remember the stories of Shinran and the countless souls resting here.
