Why is La Pointe-de-l’Île considered a bastion of Quebec’s independentist movement? La Pointe-de-l’Île is a federal electoral district. It sits on the Island of Montreal in Quebec Canada. It is a place of political importance.

La Pointe-de-l’Île was created in 2003. It was formed from parts of Anjou-Rivière-des-Prairies Hochelaga Maisonneuve and Mercier.

In 2013 the electoral boundaries shifted slightly. La Pointe-de-l’Île gained territory from Honoré-Mercier. It lost some to Hochelaga.

This area covers 41.56 square kilometers. It had a population of 106336 in 2016. The population density was 2558.61 people per square kilometer. In 2019 there were 85589 registered voters.

La Pointe-de-l’Île includes the city of Montreal-Est. It also includes parts of Montreal. These parts are in the boroughs of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles and Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.

Specifically it covers Pointe-aux-Trembles Tétreaultville and Longue-Pointe. Neighboring districts include Hochelaga Honoré-Mercier Montcalm Repentigny Verchères Les Patriotes and Longueuil Pierre-Boucher.

In the Canadian federal election of 2021 Mario Beaulieu won. He represented the Bloc Québécois. He received 23835 votes which was 46.66 percent of the total. Jonas Fadeu of the Liberal Party came in second. He got 16508 votes or 32.32 percent.

Alexandre Vallerand of the NDP secured 4954 votes. This was 9.7 percent. Massimo Anania from the Conservative Party got 3427 votes. This was 6.71 percent. Jonathan Desclin of the People’s Party received 1399 votes. This was 2.74 percent.

The industrial sector of La Pointe-de-l’Île is undergoing revitalization. It hopes to attract investments and talent. The goal is to become a modern attractive and sustainable employment hub. This sector occupies about a quarter of the eastern Montreal area. It is bounded by Pie-IX Boulevard.

The SIPI offers several advantages. It has easy access to highways 20 25 and 40. It is close to port and rail infrastructure. This provides complete intermodal options for transporting goods. These transport options reach both domestic and international markets.

The eastern part of the island has about 535600 residents. This is 26 percent of Montreal’s population. The area offers green spaces proximity to the river and friendly neighborhoods. Housing is also relatively affordable.

Several major projects are underway in eastern Montreal. These projects should make the SIPI more appealing. These include extending the blue metro line to Anjou. The Quebec government has launched a 23 million dollar project. It will span three years. It aims to boost the attractiveness and vitality of eastern Montreal. This will be achieved by improving living environments.

The SIPI has over 40 million square feet of land for development. It is one of the last large industrial areas on the Island of Montreal. Currently it houses over 1500 companies and 35000 jobs.

The SIPI is fostering an environment for ecological transition and innovation. This includes clean technologies bio-food urban agriculture and smart transport logistics. It also includes sustainable mobility. Several sectors offer synergy consolidation and development opportunities. These sectors include manufacturing metallurgy extraction polyester plastics furniture printing food distribution energy and agri-food.

Subsidies are available for rehabilitating contaminated land. The city offers a program in partnership with the Quebec government. It provides 100 million dollars to cover 90 percent of soil rehabilitation costs. This program is exclusive to two key sectors in eastern Montreal. The SIPI is one of them.

In 2018 the Quebec government and the City of Montreal signed a declaration. They pledged to revitalize eastern Montreal. The SIPI is central to this effort. It involves various governmental municipal and community stakeholders. A public consultation process developed a vision focused on quality of life innovation mobility ecological transition and partnership. This vision received strong support.

A master plan extending to 2050 aims for best practices. It focuses on urban planning sustainable mobility and climate resilience. The plan prioritizes five areas short and medium term. These are Reconnecting the urban fabric. Consolidating natural environments. Supporting the development of public transport. Accelerating the circularity of the economy. Optimizing economic growth by promoting ecological transition.
