Opened in 1997, the Twin Towers Correctional Facility looms before us. It’s a sprawling 1.5 million square foot complex. The Twin Towers Correctional Facility earned a grim distinction in 2013. It was ranked as one of the ten worst county jails in the United States. The American Civil Liberties Union received numerous complaints about the Twin Towers Correctional Facility. These complaints detailed unprovoked attacks by deputies and horrific conditions. The Twin Towers Correctional Facility has also faced criticism for its use of psychiatric drugs to control prisoners. This raises serious questions about the ethics of mental health treatment within the correctional system. Despite its state-of-the-art security, the Twin Towers Correctional Facility has seen its share of escapes. In a bizarre incident in 2001, inmate Kevin Jerome Pullum managed to escape. He altered an identification badge using a newspaper photo of Eddie Murphy. Pullum became the 13th person to successfully escape the facility, highlighting vulnerabilities despite the advanced security measures. The Twin Towers Correctional Facility has also housed many notable inmates. These include rapper The Game, rapper Freddie Gibbs, reality TV personality Paris Hilton, and former actor Danny Masterson. Even Michael Jackson’s personal doctor, Conrad Murray, and pornographic actor Ron Jeremy spent time within these walls. The sheer size and imposing structure of the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, coupled with its troubled history, certainly make it a place of complex stories. It continues to be a significant, if controversial, landmark in Los Angeles.
