Is it possible for a statue to spark both admiration and outrage? The Lincoln Sculpture in Boston certainly did.

This wasn’t just any statue. The Lincoln Sculpture depicted Abraham Lincoln standing over a kneeling, formerly enslaved man. It was intended to celebrate emancipation after the Civil War.

The statue was a gift to Boston in 1879. Moses Kimball, a local politician, donated it to the city. The sculpture was a copy of Thomas Ball’s Freedmen’s Memorial which remains in Washington D.C.’s Lincoln Park.

However, over time, the Lincoln Sculpture became a source of controversy. Many felt it presented a racist image. They questioned why a Black man was depicted kneeling before Lincoln if the statue was about freedom.

Local artist Tory Bullock spearheaded a movement to remove it. His online petition garnered over 12000 signatures. Bullock’s video highlighted the discomfort the statue caused to Black viewers. He questioned the power dynamic it represented.

The Boston Art Commission launched a survey to gather public opinion. They held meetings to hear public testimony. Ultimately, the commission voted unanimously to remove the bronze figures.

Mayor Walsh supported the decision. He acknowledged the statue’s role in perpetuating harmful prejudices. He said it obscured the contributions of Black Americans in the fight for freedom.

The removal process was carefully overseen. Art conservators documented the statue and supervised its placement into storage. The city planned to find a new location where the statue’s history could be better explained.

Ekua Holmes, Vice-Chair of the Boston Art Commission, emphasized the power of public art. She said that art should not bring shame to any group of people. The decision to remove the Lincoln Sculpture reflected a commitment to creating a more equitable and just city.

While some opposed its removal, the statue is no longer here. They viewed it as a commemoration of a crucial moment in Black history. The Lincoln Sculpture sparked a city-wide conversation about representation, history, and the power of public art.

Though gone, the debates it raised continue to resonate. The Lincoln Sculpture serves as a reminder of the complexities inherent in our shared past. It prompts us to consider whose stories are being told.
