Have you ever wondered where the Gauangelbach begins its journey? This stream, whose name is often shortened to Angelbach in local parlance, carves its path through the northern part of Baden-Württemberg. We are standing near the Gauangelbach.
The Gauangelbach is a tributary of the Leimbach. It merges with the Leimbach just before Dielheim. But before it gets there, the Gauangelbach meanders for approximately 13 kilometers.
The source of the Gauangelbach lies to the west of Gaiberg. It is nestled at the edge of the forest, near a spot called Ochsenpferch. From this high point, about 336 meters above sea level, the Gauangelbach begins its descent.
The Gauangelbach flows down nearly 200 meters. Its endpoint is roughly 141 meters above sea level. This creates an average gradient of about 15‰.
The Gauangelbach’s journey takes it through diverse landscapes. Emerging from the forest, it crosses the open fields around Gaiberg and Leimen-Lingental. The stream then skirts the Gauangelloch forest. It finally cuts through the forest towards Gauangelloch.
Near Gauangelloch, the Gauangelbach disappears into a canal. It reemerges at the Bettendorff moated castle. Flowing south for a kilometer, it reaches Schatthausen’s boundary.
Past Schatthausen’s moated castle, the stream turns southwest. Near the Hohenhardt golf course, the Ochsenbach and Maisbach streams join the Gauangelbach. Continuing its course, the Gauangelbach flows through Baiertal. Its valley joins the Leimbach valley near Dielheim’s Unterhof. The Gauangelbach finally merges into the Leimbach.
The Gauangelbach drains a substantial area of nearly 27 square kilometers. This area is split between the Odenwald and the Kraichgau regions. The highest point in the Gauangelbach’s drainage basin sits south of the Königstuhl summit.
Numerous streams feed into the Gauangelbach. These include the Teichgraben, Gießgraben, and Riegelsbach. The Diebslochgraben and Krumbach also contribute. Further downstream, the Gänsbach and Ochsenbach join the flow. Finally, the Maisbach adds its waters before the Gauangelbach meets the Leimbach.
To manage water flow, several flood retention basins have been created. These basins help control flooding in the Gauangelbach’s catchment area. The basins are located near Gauangelloch, Schatthausen, and Maisbachhof.
The Gauangelbach’s streambed reveals interesting geology. Much of the area is covered in loess sediment. However, near its origin, Upper Bunter sandstone is visible. Further downstream, various Mesozoic layers appear along the valley flanks.
In 2007, a Kamber crayfish was found in the Gauangelbach near Schatthausen. This highlights the biodiversity within the stream.
