Born on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, Edith Stein’s life at Edith Stein Zentrum began intertwined with faith. The Edith Stein Zentrum, a place of worship, reflects her complex journey. Edith Stein, born into an observant Jewish family in Breslau, found herself drawn to philosophy at a young age. She excelled academically, studying under Edmund Husserl at the University of Göttingen and later Freiburg. The outbreak of World War I interrupted her academic pursuits, leading her to serve as a Red Cross nurse. This experience deeply impacted her, exposing her to the suffering and fragility of life. It was during a summer holiday in 1921 that Stein encountered the autobiography of the mystic Teresa of Ávila. This reading ignited a spiritual transformation, leading to her baptism into the Catholic Church in 1922. The Edith Stein Zentrum commemorates this significant shift in her life. Despite her conversion, Stein continued to face prejudice. The rise of Nazism forced her to resign from her teaching position due to antisemitic legislation. She found refuge in the Carmelite monastery in Cologne, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Edith Stein Zentrum stands as a testament to her unwavering faith in the face of adversity. Seeking further safety from the Nazi regime, Stein and her sister were transferred to the Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands. However, even there, the shadow of persecution followed. In 1942, following a pastoral letter from the Dutch bishops condemning the Nazi treatment of Jews, Stein and her sister were arrested. They were deported to Auschwitz, where they perished in the gas chambers. The Edith Stein Zentrum serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic fate that befell so many during the Holocaust. Edith Stein’s life, commemorated at the Edith Stein Zentrum, was a tapestry woven with intellectual brilliance, spiritual seeking, and unwavering courage.
