Originally built around an old village hall the Village Theatre opened its doors in September 1978. It’s nestled in the heart of East Kilbride’s old village a short walk from transport links. A bustling theatre bar adds to its charm. The theatre hosts a wide range of events from professional theatre companies to musical acts.
But the Village Theatre is more than just a venue. It’s the beating heart of East Kilbride’s amateur dramatics scene. Local groups like the East Kilbride Amateur Musical Society and the EK Rep Theatre Club call it home. They put on yearly productions. The shows range from dramas to comedies and musicals. There’s something for everyone.
Before it was the Village Theatre the building had another life. It was once the Picture House a cinema that opened in 1883. That earlier building a public hall predated East Kilbride’s designation as a new town. Later in the 1970s the Town Council decided to transform the old hall into a modern theatre. The renovation kept the original hall’s structure defining the theatre’s size. The roof of that original public hall is still visible from Maxwell Drive.
A competition chose the name Village Theatre from almost a hundred entries. The very first production a pantomime called Sleeping Beauty ran in December 1977. The theatre officially opened in 1978. Scottish actor Andrew Cruickshank known for Dr Finlay’s Casebook performed the opening ceremony.
The Village Theatre boasts a traditional proscenium arch. It seats up to 318 people. It has a fly-tower an orchestra pit and excellent lighting and sound equipment. Six dressing rooms cater to its performers. The South Lanarkshire Council owns it. South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Limited runs it.
