What if bridges could talk? Monastyrsky Bridge would have many stories to tell. Let’s delve into the history of this significant bridge in Saint Petersburg.

Monastyrsky Bridge connects Bezimyanny and Monastyrsky Islands. Today, these islands appear as one. The bridge spans the Monastyrka River in the Central District.

Initially, the Monastyrsky Bridge was named Shlisselburgsky. This was after the Shlisselburgsky tract in 1828. By the mid-1830s, its name changed. The name was transferred to another bridge over the Obvodny Canal. Since 1836, the Monastyrsky Bridge has been known as Alexandrovsky. This is due to its proximity to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. That is a significant monastery nearby. People also called it Blagoveshchensky after the Blagoveshchensk Church. Also, some called it Tikhvinsky after the Tikhvin cemetery.

The modern name, Monastyrsky, became official in 1891. It is named after the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. It is also named after the Monastyrka River.

The Monastyrka River’s history is deeply intertwined with the bridge. The river was known as the Setuy River as early as 1500. A new chapter began in 1710. Tsar Peter the Great decided to found a monastery at the river’s mouth. He dedicated it to Alexander Nevsky. The first bridge here was built in 1712.

The Monastyrka River Embankment extends along most of Monastyrsky Island. It includes the Metropolitan Garden and Alexander Nevsky Monastery. The embankment stretches 1,387.7 meters.

In 1961-1964, the old Monastyrsky Bridge was dismantled. This was due to the construction of the Alexander Nevsky Bridge. A new Monastyrsky Bridge was then built.

The Monastyrsky Bridge is used by trams, cars, and pedestrians. The bridge has six lanes for vehicle traffic. The preceding bridge is Obukhovskoy Oborony. The following bridge is the 1st Lavrsky Bridge.

The Monastyrsky Bridge stands as a testament to Saint Petersburg’s history. It links not just land but also eras. From its initial construction to its modern form, it has witnessed countless changes. Next time you cross this bridge, remember its layered past.
