Curiosity tugged at me. What was the story behind Keramiksitzbrunnen? This unique fountain, nestled in Berlin-Marzahn’s Oberweißbacher Straße quarter, held a certain mystique. Keramiksitzbrunnen isn’t your typical ornate fountain. It’s more interactive, designed by Wolfgang Weber in 1988. Imagine a three-tiered ceramic fountain basin. It’s about five meters in diameter. The edge is about 45 centimeters high, sloping inwards. This allows people to sit with their legs dangling in the cool water. The Keramiksitzbrunnen was intended as a refreshing oasis in the heart of Marzahn, a place where residents could relax and enjoy the water. Sadly, as of 2023, the Keramiksitzbrunnen sits silent and still. The water no longer flows. Vandalism has taken its toll. The surrounding promenade is slated for redevelopment. The future of Keramiksitzbrunnen remains uncertain. Perhaps it will be restored to its former glory, a testament to Weber’s vision. Perhaps it will be replaced with something new. Regardless, Keramiksitzbrunnen stands as a reminder of Marzahn’s past, a quirky piece of history waiting to be rediscovered.
