Let’s explore some of Cornerstone’s history. The building at 9 East 7th Street is historic. It was originally constructed in 1867. It was designed as the Metropolitan Savings Bank. Carl Pfeiffer was the renowned architect. It was praised as Manhattan’s first fireproof building.
The First Ukrainian Evangelical Pentecostal Church acquired it in 1937. Since then, it has been a religious space. In 2021, the NYC Department of Buildings issued violations. This prompted a comprehensive Building Envelope Survey in 2016. Preservation experts were hired in 2022. They assessed and planned the rehabilitation needs.
The repairs include the metal cornice and mansard roof elements. The wood windows and metal trim also need work. Marble walls will be repaired too. This project aims to fully rehabilitate the historic building envelope. The aim is to ensure its preservation.
Cornerstone Church offers Sunday services at 10:00 am. These services are both in person and online via YouTube. Sunday Youth Service is at 1:30 pm in person.
