Imagine a time long before Atlanta was even incorporated. Today we stand before Mount Gilead Church. It has a rich history dating back nearly two centuries.

Mount Gilead Church stands as a testament to faith. It embodies community spirit in what is now Fulton County. Founded on April 23 1824 by Reverend John M Smith, this church quickly became a cornerstone. Reverend William J Parks organized it. Many early settlers found solace and community here. Their descendants continue to call this area home.

The church’s story is interwoven with the historical threads of the region. During the tumultuous years of the Civil War, Mount Gilead served a dual purpose. Both Confederate and Federal forces used it as a hospital. Confederate cavalry under Ross occupied it in August 1864. McDowell’s Confederate Scouts also passed through. A skirmish unfolded near here on August 28 1864. Fragments of the Federal 2nd Division clashed as they moved toward Jonesboro.

The original structure has been rebuilt several times. This reflects its enduring presence. Yet it also shows the community’s resilience through challenges.

Mount Gilead spawned the Mt Gilead Camp Ground around 1834. It stood about two and a half miles north. The camp became a hub for religious gatherings. It drew people from far and wide. Special trains even ran from Atlanta to accommodate the crowds. Famous preachers like Methodist Bishop Warren Candler graced the camp.

The Second Great Awakening swept through America in the early 1800s. This fueled religious fervor. Camps like Mt Gilead became major social and religious events. People gathered to hear touring preachers. They built simple cabins. These events became integral to rural community life.

The camp declined by the 1940s. An attempt to modernize it included a hotel and updated utilities. The camp closed in 1966. Vandals and arson damaged the property by 1990. Only the arbor and a damaged hut remained.

Today Mount Gilead’s legacy is more than just a memory. A minister named Newania Wess is leading an effort to preserve the site. The Atlanta Preservation Center supports her. Councilmember Marci Collier Overstreet also backs it. They seek to designate it as a City of Atlanta landmark.

The arbor still stands. It is a reminder of the past. Its preservation is vital. As Jeff Harbin put it, the campground is one of the most historic sites in Atlanta. Political candidates spoke here. Graduations took place here.

So as we stand here let us remember the generations. They found faith and community at Mount Gilead. Let us honor their legacy. Let’s support those who are working to preserve this historical treasure for generations to come.
