Seventy-five kilometers east of Berlin lies a hidden gem. It is called Booßener Teichgebiet. This nature reserve awaits our discovery.

The Booßener Teichgebiet spans 104 hectares. It stretches southeast of Wulkow and northeast of Booßen. Booßen itself is part of Frankfurt Oder. The area received protection in March 2008. It is identified by the number 1602.

Imagine this valley. It is a glacial meltwater channel. It sits on the edge of the Lebus Plateau. The Booßener Mühlenfließ flows through it. This stream is accompanied by wetlands. There are also ponds and adjacent dry slopes.

The Booßener Teichgebiet is a Natura 2000 site. It was established in September 2000. Its purpose is to protect animal species. It became a special conservation area in May 2008.

The protected area includes natural habitats. There are eutrophic lakes. There are also rivers with Ranunculion fluitantis vegetation. Xeris sandy calcareous grasslands can be found. Hydrophilic tall herb fringe communities grow here. Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior thrive.

Several protected species call this area home. These include birds like the kingfisher. Common snipes and grey wagtails are present. Sand martins and redshanks also live here. Amphibians such as the European fire-bellied toad thrive. Mammals include beavers and otters.
