Hidden amongst the buildings of Campamento stands the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar. It’s more than just a church. It’s a testament to faith and community. The church has overcome many challenges throughout its history.
Founded in 1936 the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar del Campamento emerged during a turbulent time for Spain. Imagine the difficulty of establishing a parish amid the rising tensions that would soon erupt into civil war. The church owes its existence to the parish of San Pedro Apóstol de Carabanchel Alto. It was from this territory that Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar was formed.
Initially the area was sparsely populated. About three thousand people were spread across a large area. Military presence influenced the area. The name “Campamento” itself suggests military connections. The church likely grew quietly during the Civil War. It offered solace amid the conflict.
After the war life slowly returned to normal. Families rebuilt their lives. The chapel within the military complex served as a place of worship. Parishioners worked hard to acquire land. They constructed a nave. This nave served as a place of worship until 1992. Industrialization brought more people to the city. The Parroquia del Pilar de Campamento grew. New parishes were established nearby.
Today about twenty-five thousand people live within the parish boundaries. The Carretera de Extremadura and the Casa de Campo define its limits. A priest acquired land. He envisioned a new parish complex. He sadly died before his dream was realized. A new complex was inaugurated in 1992 but it was unfinished.
The people are simple middle-class folk. They retain a village spirit. Their faith is traditional. This sometimes causes friction with younger generations. Still church attendance remains high.
Interestingly the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar del Campamento had no bell tower when it was first built. For twenty-five years the community gathered without the sound of bells. Finally in 2017 a bell tower was added. This addition significantly improved the church’s identity. It made it more recognizable as a religious building. The campanario was inaugurated almost without notice. The surprise added to the celebratory feel of the construction.
Budget constraints influenced the design. Architects chose a location that maximized visibility. It also improved the connection between the buildings. The design was inspired by Russian Constructivism. It also echoes the neo-Gothic bell towers of Madrid. The structure is mostly a bare framework.
The tower’s triangular shape was chosen for its geometry. It also simplified construction. The bell tower changes with light and perspective. Its reflective materials interact with the urban environment.
The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar celebrates its patron saint on October 12th. The festivities include a novena Masses and a floral offering. The community gathers for fun activities. There are barbecues music and games for all ages.
