Did the name Obadiah Williams ever cross your mind as you strolled through Dartry? Dartry, a charming suburb of Dublin, nestled between Rathmines and Milltown. It’s a place where history whispers from the walls of its elegant houses and echoes in the rustle of leaves in Palmerston Park. Dartry, often overlooked, holds captivating stories. One such story begins with Obadiah Williams, a wealthy Huguenot merchant, who in 1810 commissioned the construction of a grand mansion. This mansion, originally called Dartry Hall, later became known as Dartry House. Imagine Dartry House in its prime, a two-story masterpiece with later additions, including a turret around 1900, giving it an almost fairytale quality. This house, with its imposing presence and rich history, stands as a testament to the changing times of Dartry. Obadiah’s legacy gave way to another prominent figure, William Martin Murphy, a name synonymous with both progress and controversy in Dublin’s history. Murphy, owner of the Irish Independent and a key player in the Dublin Lockout of 1913, resided in Dartry House. The very tram line that brought Dubliners to Dartry’s doorstep, a testament to Murphy’s involvement with the Dublin United Tramways Company, terminated near his grand residence. The old tram terminus and sheds now house an engineering firm, a subtle nod to the area’s evolving landscape. Dartry House, once the scene of heated disputes and political maneuvering, later became a haven for the Mill Hill Fathers, a congregation of missionary priests. They opened its doors to various mission agencies and voluntary organizations, continuing the cycle of transformation in Dartry. Today, Dartry House stands proudly, having undergone extensive restoration, transformed into luxurious apartments. Yet, its walls still hold the echoes of its vibrant past. The story of Dartry House is the story of Dartry itself. A tale of merchants and industrialists, of trams and turmoil, of missionaries and modern living. As you walk through Dartry, remember the whispers of history that surround you. They tell the story of a place that continues to evolve, while still cherishing the echoes of its past.
