In 1853 a group of Methodist Episcopal Church members decided to form their own congregation. They were driven by a profound belief and a shared desire to build a church. Bishop Edmond Storer Janes a highly regarded preacher played a pivotal role in the church’s early years. The church was named in his honor. He dedicated the first church building. The first services were held in a humble schoolhouse. This was at the corner of Patchen Avenue and Madison Street. Later a grander church was constructed in 1883. Its cornerstone was laid marking a major milestone. This church boasted a magnificent pipe organ. It was so impressive it was selected for performances by the American Guild of Organists. Under the leadership of Reverend Robert Orlando Simpson the congregation planned for a new church. The new building was completed in 1990. Its cornerstone was laid in 1987.
