Picture this A majestic church stands before you. This is Janes Methodist Episcopal Church in Brooklyn New York. Its story begins long ago. It is deeply rooted in the unwavering faith of a community.

In 1853 a group of Methodist Episcopal Church members decided to form their own congregation. They were driven by a profound belief and a shared desire to build a church. Bishop Edmond Storer Janes a highly regarded preacher played a pivotal role in the church’s early years. The church was named in his honor. He dedicated the first church building. This was a significant act of faith and commitment.

The first services were held in a humble schoolhouse. This was at the corner of Patchen Avenue and Madison Street. Later a grander church was constructed in 1883. Its cornerstone was laid marking a major milestone. This church boasted a magnificent pipe organ. It was so impressive it was selected for performances by the American Guild of Organists. The church also had a vibrant music ministry and a church school. This nurtured many young missionaries and ministers.

As the congregation expanded the church underwent renovations. A parish house was added. The pipe organ was also rebuilt and enlarged. The church faced many trials throughout its history. In 1948 after a period of closure the congregation reopened the church doors. They faced challenges in maintaining the building. This indomitable spirit led to the church becoming a dynamic force in the community. It played a significant role in the Civil Rights era.

Tragedy struck in 1984. A devastating fire destroyed the original century-old building. However the congregation’s faith remained strong. They received support from neighboring churches. They were able to continue holding services in other locations.

Under the leadership of Reverend Robert Orlando Simpson the congregation planned for a new church. The new building was completed in 1990. Its cornerstone was laid in 1987. This signified a triumphant rebirth. This new Janes Methodist Episcopal Church continues to be a beacon of hope and service in Bedford-Stuyvesant. It offers support and guidance to its members and the wider community.

Janes Methodist Episcopal Church is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith perseverance and community. It continues a legacy of service and spiritual strength. The church stands as a symbol of hope. Its doors remain open to all who seek comfort guidance and fellowship.
