Has anyone ever heard of a saint who never existed? Here at Sankt Bodil Kirke, that’s precisely the riddle we’re about to unravel. Sankt Bodil Kirke, a beautiful parish church west of Nexø, has stood on this very spot since the 13th century. Its history is a fascinating mix of mistaken identity and architectural marvels. Originally built around 1200, Sankt Bodil Kirke was dedicated to the English saint, Botwulf of Thorney. However, somewhere along the way, a clerical error occurred. By 1530, the church became associated with “Bodil,” a female saint who, as far as historians can tell, never actually existed. Yet, the name stuck. The parish itself is known as Bodilsker, a testament to this intriguing historical hiccup. Sankt Bodil Kirke has seen its share of changes over the centuries. The main structure, with its apse, chancel, and nave, dates back to the Romanesque period. The west tower, slightly younger, adds to the church’s unique charm. Look closely, and you’ll notice the late-Gothic porch sheltering the south door. In the 19th century, the church gained its independence from the Danish crown. Later, facing growing congregations, Sankt Bodil Kirke almost met the wrecking ball. Plans arose in the early 20th century to tear it down and rebuild it. Thankfully, the National Museum intervened, recognizing the church’s historical importance. The solution came not in demolition, but in expansion. A large transept was added in 1911, allowing the church to accommodate its growing parish. The tower also underwent renovations around 1913, led by architect Mathias Bidstrup. Inside Sankt Bodil Kirke, you’ll find another piece of history. The original Romanesque font, crafted from Gotland limestone. Take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship of the south door, its Romanesque stonework remarkably preserved. And don’t miss the “Devil’s Hat,” a round stone embedded in the bell tower wall. Legend says a fleeing priest outran the Devil, who, in a fit of rage, hurled his hat at the church, leaving a permanent mark on Sankt Bodil Kirke. So, as you stand before Sankt Bodil Kirke, remember the saint who wasn’t, the near-demolition, and the Devil’s misplaced hat. It’s a story that blends history, architecture, and a touch of local legend, creating a truly unique experience here on the beautiful island of Bornholm.
