Ever wondered where the story of Thai workers is told? The Thai Labour Museum stands as a testament to their struggles and triumphs. It is a place to remember Thai labour history.

Right here near the Makkasan railway station, this modest red building holds a wealth of history. Before becoming a museum on October 17, 1993, it served as the railway police station and then the railway labour union office.

The Thai Labour Museum captures 300 years of Thai labour movement history. It begins from the days of slavery to the present. You can trace the evolution of Thai labour here.

Outside, a monument titled “Dignity of Labour” depicts a man and woman pushing a massive wheel. This symbolizes the relentless wheel of history.

Inside the Thai Labour Museum, the journey begins with slavery. Since the 1700s, slaves and commoners toiled without wages. Commoners were tattooed with their names and masters.

The Bowring Treaty of 1855 brought reform. This treaty with King Rama IV opened up trade. Increased labour demand was met by Chinese immigrants. This marked the beginning of paid labour, though conditions were harsh.

King Chulalongkorn or King Rama V abolished slavery in 1873. This pivotal moment is recorded in the Thai Labour Museum. All men were then free to seek fair employment for fair wages.

In the early 1920s, labour lacked organization rights. Industrial disputes and strikes were frequent. Intellectuals tried to raise awareness of this growing problem.

The 1932 coup brought hopes of improvement. The Thai Tram Workers Association was formed as the first labour union. A nationalist economic policy required Thai ownership of companies. It also required registration of the unemployed and recognition of workers’ rights.

World War II caused unemployment and hardships. Many workers joined the underground resistance. During the Cold War, military dictators clamped down on labour. Workers’ rights and unions were considered unfavorable to investment.

In 1973, an alliance of workers, farmers, and students boiled over. The video in the Thai Labour Museum details the events leading up to the October 14 bloodbath.

Other issues included the abuse of child and women labour. There was also gross neglect of workers’ safety. In 1993, 188 workers died in the Kader Doll Factory fire. The 1997 economic crisis was another setback.

The Thai Labour Museum embodies the spirit of the exploited and neglected. The labour movement took their plight to the people through music. Hardships are expressed through songs with images of broken dolls. They also show tearful children mourning the loss of their mothers in the Kader Doll Factory fire.

Current issues still facing Thai labour today include a fair minimum daily wage. It also includes the privatization of state enterprises and workers’ safety.

The Thai Labour Museum stands as a reminder of the ongoing journey for workers’ rights. Take a moment to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of Thai labourers. Their story continues to shape Thailand’s future.
