In the heart of East Boston, Our Lady of the Assumption Church has witnessed 150 years of history. Our Lady of the Assumption Church wasn’t the first Catholic church in East Boston. It was actually the third, built to serve the growing Catholic community in the eastern part of the neighborhood. Construction began in 1869 and was completed in 1873. The driving force behind the church’s construction was Father James Fitton. He purchased the land on Sumner Street in 1867. The construction was overseen by his nephew, Father Joseph H. Cassin. He became the church’s rector in 1870. Our Lady of the Assumption Church wasn’t just a place for Sunday Mass. It became a vital community hub. It hosted a school, a CYO program, a drum-and-bugle corp, and countless social events. From dinners and dances to fundraisers and political gatherings, the church was the heart of Jeffries Point and beyond. It even served as a meeting place for community discussions regarding Logan Airport’s expansion in the 1960s. In 2019, Cardinal Sean O’Malley celebrated a special Mass to commemorate the church’s 150th anniversary. This milestone highlighted the church’s enduring legacy. It continues to serve a diverse community. Our Lady of the Assumption Church stands as a testament to the power of faith and community. It also reflects the ever-evolving story of East Boston.
