Journey with me back to the 10th century. King Ordoño III of León generously gifted the Vila de Moraria and Monte Longo to the Guimarães monastery. This act set the stage for the story of Fafe. Fafe sits in northern Portugal’s Braga district. Its history is long and fascinating. In 1220, inquiries first identified the territory of Monte Longo, laying the groundwork for the future municipality.

By 1320, Fafe became part of Braga’s diocese and the Terra de Entre Ave e Vizela, also known as Terra de Montelongo. Fafe encompassed 15 parishes, including Santa Ovaia Antiga, later known as Santa Eulália de Fafe. A pivotal moment in Fafe’s history arrived in 1514. King Manuel I granted the town its first foral, a royal charter. The 1527 census revealed a modest population of 64 neighbors in Santa Ovaya Antigua. The name “Fafe” first appeared in records in 1647. Shortly after, in 1655, the parish officially adopted the name Santa Eulália de Fafe.

In 1706, the Count of Vimieiro became the donatário of Fafe and the Montelongo municipality. By 1758, the Marquis of Valença, D. Miguel de Portugal e Castro, held this prestigious title. Fafe’s development continued with the arrival of the Guimarães narrow-gauge railway line, operating between 1907 and 1986. Fafe holds a special celebration every May 16th. Since the late 18th century, the city has hosted “Feiras Francas”. This traditional fair includes a livestock contest and a thrilling horse race. Today, the festivities blend the old with the new, featuring folk music, DJs, equestrian displays, and car racing.

Fafe is more than just history. It’s a vibrant municipality nestled in a picturesque valley. It’s a land of thrills, known for its rally racing and the famous “Lamerinha Jump”. It’s a land of charms, offering scenic views of green hills and the Queimadela Reservoir Lake. It’s also a land of flavors. Here, you must try the famed Roasted Veal, Fafe’s Way, cooked in a rustic wood-burning oven and paired with local vinho verde. Don’t forget to savor the traditional doces de gema or the tasty pão-de-ló for dessert. Fafe is also a land of culture, boasting the impressive Fafe Teatro Cinema, a hub for various events. From its historical roots to its modern attractions, Fafe offers a captivating experience.
