Originally, the parish met in a modest space. It was on the first floor of an apartment building on Kulmbacher Straße. As the Russian community in Berlin grew, this space became too small. In 2007, the parish acquired a property from the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district. It was the site of a former kindergarten. The new church was built on its foundations. Elements from other Christian buildings were incorporated into its design.
The Russische Orthodoxe Kirche “Schutz der Gottesmutter” Berlin was consecrated on March 7, 2008. Archbishop Mark Arndt of Berlin and Germany and parish priest André Sikojev officiated. The golden onion domes were installed on October 13, 2009. These domes came from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. This added a distinctive Russian touch to the Berlin skyline.
This church can accommodate up to 400 worshipers. In the basement, there is a sacristy and a place for baking communion bread. There are also rooms for church events. As the cultural center of Berlin’s oldest Russian Orthodox parish, the building also houses a community hall. You will also find offices, youth rooms, a music room, a library, a kitchen, and a pilgrim apartment. The altar came from a parish church dedicated to St. Sergius of Radonezh.
In the garden, there is a bell tower. It is a wooden pavilion with a hexagonal base. A bell ringer operates the bells in the traditional Russian Orthodox manner. They use ropes to create the sounds.
