Tradition runs deep here at Grund- und Stadtteilschule Kirchenwerder, Standort Kirchenwerder. This school stands as one of the seven small rural schools in the Vierlande region. Grund- und Stadtteilschule Kirchenwerder is closely linked to the Stadtteilschule Kirchwerder.

Grund- und Stadtteilschule Kirchenwerder has a long history in the rural surroundings of Hamburg. At Kirchwerder Hausdeich 341 you will find the traditional building. The teachers and staff show great commitment to the children. They value tolerance and respect for every individual.

A key goal is creating a respectful and appreciative social climate in the classrooms. This helps students learn together effectively. In the 3rd grade, students can train to become mediators. Social skills training based on the Petermann concept is also offered in small groups from the 3rd grade. All children agree on common rules. Starting in the 2nd grade, a class council meets regularly in all classes.

The educators at Grund- und Stadtteilschule Kirchenwerder guide children in philosophical inquiry. Children formulate their own research questions. These questions should be engaging and complex enough to explore over several months. The children mostly carry out experiments. They also explore their research questions through art. Teachers, parents and other adults at our school become learning mentors. They guide and support the children in research communities.

Grund- und Stadtteilschule Kirchenwerder benefits from its close relationship with the Stadtteilschule. This close exchange optimizes the transition to the 5th grade for our primary school students. Recognizing children in their diversity is especially important to us. We want to strengthen their personalities and support them individually.

The Stadtteilschule Kirchwerder expanded to a new building east of Kirchenheerweg in late 2024. Thomas Kröger Architekten GmbH from Berlin designed it. The growing number of students made the expansion necessary. Originally, they planned to expand the Stadtteilschule at Kirchwerder Hausdeich 341. These plans proved unfeasible. So, they decided to build a new school on a site east of Kirchenheerweg.

The Grundschule Kirchwerder remains at Kirchwerder Hausdeich 341. The new location accommodates all the space needs of the Stadtteilschule Kirchwerder. This includes classrooms, workshops, a library, a cafeteria and an auditorium. A triple gymnasium with a gallery and a large outdoor sports field were built for school and club sports.

Two elongated school buildings evoke the traditional longhouses of the region. The buildings have three floors each. One is 130 meters long. The other is almost 100 meters long. They feature pre-hung brick facades. These facades visually resemble thatched farmhouses. With their special architecture and facade design, the two “longhouses” blend carefully into the surroundings. At the same time, they set architectural accents in Kirchwerder.

A new bus stop was built on the Marschbahndamm for transport. A pedestrian bridge provides access to the school grounds from there. The buildings meet the Efficiency House Standard EG 40. A combined heat and power plant powered by bio-methane, photovoltaic systems and green roofs contribute to this.

The first students began using the new school at the start of the 2024/25 school year. The festive opening and full commissioning took place on January 6, 2025. The new building can accommodate up to 1,100 students and about 110 teachers. Besides classrooms there are also workshops, a library, a canteen and an auditorium. A triple sports hall with visitor stands and a large outdoor sports field are available for school and club sports.

Grund- und Stadtteilschule Kirchenwerder continues its mission. It provides a nurturing environment where tradition meets modern education. The school prepares students for their future.
