“A domain of beavers.” That’s the rough translation of Beuvry, a name whispered through centuries from its Celtic roots, “Bebos” (beaver) and “Y” (place). Beuvry’s history, etched in stone and story, stretches back to a time when its landscape was a mosaic of peat bogs and marshes. Traces of Neolithic inhabitants linger, alongside pottery shards echoing Roman whispers from the 1st or 2nd century. The first written record of Beuvry appears in 878, a donation to the Marchiennes Abbey. Another mention surfaces in a 1275 charter, a testament to Beuvry’s growing significance. Beuvry’s destiny was intertwined with powerful families. From the Houses of Artois and Burgundy, it passed to the Hénin-Liétard-Boussut family. Finally, the ‘chatelline’ of Beuvry found its way to the Ghistelles family, whose red shield with a silver chevron became the town’s emblem. Beuvry’s story isn’t just about noble families. In the 18th century, sandstone quarries and flax fields shaped its economy. Beuvry witnessed incredible feats. On September 19, 1784, the Robert brothers landed their hydrogen balloon, La Caroline, near the old windmill after a remarkable journey from Paris. This event, a world record for a 100km flight, is still celebrated annually with the “Ducasse du Ballon”. The whispers of war also echo through Beuvry. The town, twice awarded the Croix de Guerre for its resilience during both World Wars, bears witness to the scars of conflict. The British and Indian Gorre Military Cemetery, a somber reminder of World War I, holds the remains of 938 soldiers. The nearby Gorre Priory, with its surviving farmhouse, recalls a history stretching back to the 12th century. It served as a monastery and a place of justice, radiating its influence across the region. Beuvry even holds a touch of mystery. The church of St. Martin, a magnificent 16th-century structure, houses the “Devil’s Stone.” Legend claims that turning this unsealed stone would unleash hellish spirits. Beuvry’s past isn’t just a collection of dates and names. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with the threads of human ingenuity, resilience, and the ever-present whisper of history.
