Can a chance encounter change a life? At DUO FOR A JOB, it’s not just a possibility. It’s the entire premise. DUO FOR A JOB, right here in Brussels, isn’t just a building. It’s a catalyst for opportunity, connecting young job seekers with seasoned mentors. Founded in 2013, DUO FOR A JOB was born from a simple yet powerful idea: bridging the gap between experience and aspiration. The founders recognized a double challenge in Belgium. Young people, particularly those with a migrant background, faced unequal access to the job market. Simultaneously, experienced professionals over 50 often found themselves undervalued and underemployed. DUO FOR A JOB tackles both issues head-on.
This organization pairs young individuals, known as “mentees,” with experienced professionals over 50, called “mentors.” These mentors, often retired or semi-retired, come from various sectors and possess a wealth of knowledge. They volunteer their time to guide and support their mentees, helping them navigate the often daunting job market. DUO FOR A JOB facilitates these pairings, ensuring a match based on shared interests or career goals. The duos meet weekly for six months, building a relationship of trust and mutual respect. Mentors share their expertise, offering advice on resumes, interview techniques, and networking strategies. They also provide invaluable insight into specific industries and company cultures.
DUO FOR A JOB has achieved remarkable success since its inception. They’ve created thousands of duos across multiple cities in Belgium, including Brussels, Liège, Antwerp, Ghent, and Mechelen. They’ve even expanded internationally, with branches in France and the Netherlands. DUO FOR A JOB boasts a high success rate. Seventy-one percent of their mentees find jobs, internships, or training programs. Over half secure permanent positions within a year of completing the program. The program benefits mentors as well. They report feeling valued and purposeful, enjoying the opportunity to share their skills and learn from a younger generation. The experience often creates lasting bonds between mentors and mentees, fostering a sense of community and cross-cultural understanding.
DUO FOR A JOB is more than just a job placement program. It’s an investment in the future, connecting generations, fostering inclusivity, and empowering individuals to reach their full potential. They are making a real difference in the lives of young job seekers, proving that shared experience can unlock opportunity and create a brighter future for everyone involved.
