Why do children carry lanterns on November 11th? The answer lies in the story of St Martin. Right here in front of us stands a church dedicated to this remarkable saint. St Martin of Tours a soldier in the Roman army was known for his incredible kindness. One cold winter night he encountered a freezing beggar. Without hesitation Martin divided his own warm cloak sharing half with the needy man. That night St Martin dreamt of Jesus wearing the very half of his cloak he had given away. This act of selfless generosity profoundly changed his life. He converted to Christianity eventually becoming Bishop of Tours. St Martin died on November 8th 397. His burial three days later on November 11th was marked by a huge procession of lights. This beautiful tradition is continued to this day with children carrying lanterns symbolizing the light of St Martin’s compassion. The lantern parades particularly popular in Germany and other parts of Europe are more than just a celebration. They are a living testament to St Martin’s legacy a reminder of the power of kindness and the warmth it brings to the world. The story of St Martin is not just about a shared cloak it’s about the enduring spirit of generosity. This church stands as a powerful reminder of that spirit a beacon illuminating the path toward compassion and community. It’s a tradition that continues to inspire us to share our light and warmth with those in need. And so each year on November 11th children across Europe carry their glowing lanterns singing songs and celebrating the life and teachings of St Martin. Let’s take a moment to reflect on his incredible legacy a legacy that continues to shine brightly in our hearts.
