Is it a message, a poem, or simply an artistic expression? Here before us lies “We are still and reflective,” a captivating ground sculpture by Martin Boyce. This remarkable piece was created in 2007 as part of the Skulptur Projekte Münster, an exhibition that graces the city every decade. Unlike sculptures that tower above, “We are still and reflective” lies subtly beneath the horizon, almost camouflaged within the landscape. Boyce crafted it from cast concrete slabs arranged in 13 geometric shapes, forming a mesmerizing pattern that seems to whisper rather than shout. What makes this sculpture even more intriguing is how Boyce incorporated the existing trees into his design. They rise from within the geometric layout, as if nature itself is adding its own unique commentary. Look closer, and you’ll notice bands of metal embedded in the concrete joints. These gleaming brass strips, initially a bright gold, form stylized letters that spell out the sculpture’s poignant name: “We are still and reflective.” The message, however, remains open to interpretation, inviting quiet contemplation and reflection from each passerby – just as Boyce intended.
